The
Kaufman Center's annual Gala celebration was held on
May 30 at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in New York City.
This elegant evening was hosted by world-renowned composer,
musician and author Peter Schickele and featured a
special performance by Leon Dorsey, as well as presentations
from Lucy Moses School and Special
Music School student
musicians. Honorary chairs for the event were Laurie
Anderson, Marilyn Bergman, Elaine and Henry
Kaufman,
Ken Lipper, Meredith
Monk, and Peter Schickele.
The evening honored three outstanding
individuals: Bruce Mosler, CEO of Cushman & Wakefield;
John Schaefer, WNYC radio personality; and Paul
Ingrassia,
Managing Director and Group Head of Citicorp's North
American Real Estate and Lodging Group.
The Gala raised over $700,000 which will support a
wide variety of programs, including Merkin Hall's exciting
jazz, classical, contemporary and Broadway concerts;
scholarships for study at the Lucy Moses School; excellent
academics and rigorous musical training at the Special
Music School; and community outreach initiatives such
as the Suzuki Program, a partnership with the Manhattan
School for Children, and performances for local elementary
schools and day camps. Proceeds from the annual gala
benefit allow the Kaufman Center to continue to provide
innovative, affordable arts programming and education
to more than 70,000 students, concertgoers, musicians
and music lovers each year.
