Jean Ashton is executive vice president and library director at the New York-Historical Society.
Education:She received her Ph.D. in American Literature from Columbia University in 1970, and her Masters of Library Science from Rutgers University in 1985.

Background:Ashton started out as an intern at the New-York Historical Society in 1984 and went on to work as a reference librarian. After earning her master's degree in library science in 1985, Dr. Ashton served as assistant, then associate librarian for public services and as acting director until her appointment as director in 1990. In 1993 Dr. Ashton left to join Columbia University as director of its Rare Book and Manuscript collection.
She is the author of
Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Reference Guide, and a co-author of
Emerging Voices: American Women Writers, 1650-1920.
